The municipality to which Soledad belongs includes the southern municipality of Monterey in the Salinas chain and has a population of about 3,000. In the mid-1850s, it became an inn and became a popular inn on the Butterfield Overland Stage Route, which ran between San Diego and San Jose, and San Bernardino and Santa Cruz counties on both sides of the San Gabriel River.
